If your blood pressure sits just above the healthy range, the gentle, flowing movements of tai chi may do more to bring it down than a brisk aerobic workout. In a 12-month randomized trial of adults with prehypertension—blood pressure that is higher than normal but not yet high enough to be called hypertension—those assigned to tai chi lowered their systolic blood pressure (the top number, the pressure in your arteries when the heart beats) by about 7 points, compared with about 4.6 points in a group doing standard aerobic exercise.1

By the end of the study, about 22% of tai chi participants had reached a normal blood pressure without medication, compared with about 16% of those doing aerobic exercise.1

Researchers think practices like this may ease activity in the sympathetic nervous system—the body’s “fight or flight” branch that can tighten blood vessels and push pressure up—while encouraging the calmer “rest and digest” state. The breathing and mental focus that set tai chi apart from ordinary exercise may be part of why it edged out aerobic activity here, though the study was not designed to pinpoint the exact mechanism.1
Both Groups Improved, Tai Chi a Bit More
It is worth keeping the findings in proportion. Both groups improved, so aerobic exercise still lowered blood pressure—tai chi simply lowered it a bit more in this trial. The participants were a specific group, adults with prehypertension, followed for one year, and individual results vary. The study also cannot tell you whether tai chi would work as well alongside, or instead of, any treatment you may already be using.
17 Trials Found Systolic About 9 mm Hg Lower
Other research points the same way on tai chi itself: a 2025 pooling of 17 randomized trials in adults with high blood pressure linked it to systolic readings about 9 mm Hg lower than comparison groups.2 Less settled is the bottom number—a 2024 review of five trials comparing tai chi with routine care found lower systolic pressure but no clear difference in diastolic pressure, the pressure between beats.3
