In a UK study that followed 458,146 adults for a median of 12.6 years, people who were never visited by friends or family had a 39% higher risk of dying from any cause.1 The pattern behaved like a threshold rather than a slope: higher risk appeared only when visits fell below about once a month, and being visited monthly was linked to much the same benefit as being visited daily.
Often Feeling Lonely Carried a 6% Higher Risk
The researchers measured social connection with five plain questions, split into two kinds. Two were “functional”—the quality of connection: whether people had someone close to confide in, and how often they felt lonely. Three were “structural”—the shape of daily life: how often friends and family visited, whether they took part in a weekly group activity such as a club or class, and whether they lived alone. Each of the five was independently linked to the risk of death, but the visit question stood out: never having visitors carried a far larger link than often feeling lonely, which was tied to a 6% higher risk.1
33,135 Deaths Recorded Through National Death Registers
Participants in UK Biobank, a large British health project, answered the five questions once at enrollment, mostly in middle age. Researchers then followed them for more than a decade through national death registers, which record every death and its cause. Over that period 33,135 participants died, including 5,112 from cardiovascular disease—disease of the heart and blood vessels.1 That was 7.2% of everyone followed, and 1.1% died of cardiovascular disease.1
Never Visited and Living Alone, 77% Higher Risk
The forms of disconnection compounded one another. People who were never visited and also lived alone had a 77% higher risk of death than people with daily visits who lived with someone. And when the two kinds of isolation were combined—feeling disconnected and being structurally cut off—cardiovascular death risk was 63% higher than in people isolated by neither measure.1 Notably, joining weekly group activities did not appear to offset the risk tied to never having visitors: like nutrients in a diet, one form of connection did not substitute for another.
Declining Health May Itself Reduce Visits
This is an observational study, so it shows an association, not proof that visits themselves lengthen life. The arrow could partly run the other way—people in declining health may receive fewer visits precisely because they are unwell—and single questions are a rough measure of a social life. Even so, the size of the study and the consistency across measures make the central pattern hard to dismiss: the people most cut off from others died at meaningfully higher rates.
90 Studies Linked Isolation to 32% Higher Mortality
A 2023 review pooling 90 long-term studies found social isolation—being structurally cut off from others—linked to a 32% higher risk of death, close to what this study reported.2 But an earlier analysis pooling 91 studies of how often people had contact found a smaller link, about 13% higher mortality, and no clear association for contact with family members or among men.3 How much visit frequency alone captures that risk is less settled.
