If your mind feels a little quieter after a walk, a large new analysis offers a reason to take that feeling seriously. Pooling data from 11 long-term studies across several countries, researchers found that people who were more physically active were less likely to develop an anxiety disorder—a condition of persistent, excessive worry or fear that interferes with everyday life. The protection did not keep climbing without limit, though. The biggest reduction in risk, roughly 16 percent, appeared at a moderate weekly amount of activity, and pushing well beyond that added no further benefit.1
Benefit Peaked Near 30 MET-Hours per Week
The researchers measured activity in MET-hours per week. A MET, or metabolic equivalent, is simply a gauge of how hard your body is working: sitting quietly is about one MET, while brisk walking is roughly four. MET-hours combine intensity and time, so they capture both how vigorously and how long someone moves. The risk of anxiety fell steadily as activity rose up to about 30 MET-hours per week—roughly the equivalent of an hour of brisk walking on most days—where the benefit peaked at about 16 percent lower risk compared with being inactive. The widely used minimum activity guideline, about 150 minutes of moderate movement a week, landed lower on the curve, linked to roughly an 8 to 14 percent lower risk. Beyond about 50 MET-hours a week, the advantage began to fade rather than grow.1
Eleven Cohorts, Nearly 296,000 People, 13,000 Anxiety Cases
This was a meta-analysis, meaning the team combined the results of many separate studies rather than running a new experiment. They pooled 11 prospective cohort studies—investigations that enroll healthy people, record their activity levels, and then follow them for years to see who later develops a condition. The authors noted at the outset that the shape of this dose response was uncertain, and reported that the pooled data confirmed one exists.1 Altogether the analysis covered nearly 296,000 participants tracked over more than 1.9 million person-years, during which about 13,000 people developed anxiety. The anxiety was not self-judged; it was identified through medical registries, structured diagnostic interviews, or validated screening questionnaires with established cutoff scores. Because the outcome unfolded over years of follow-up, the finding reflects who developed anxiety over time, not a snapshot of mood on any single day.
Stress Hormones, Inflammation, and Brain Chemistry May Explain It
Researchers have proposed several plausible explanations, though this analysis was not designed to prove any of them. Exercise dampens the body’s stress-hormone response and lowers baseline levels of inflammation—the immune system’s low-grade “simmer” that has been tied to mood problems. It also nudges brain chemistry, boosting signaling molecules involved in mood regulation and the growth of new neural connections. On top of the biology, being active often brings structure, a sense of accomplishment, and social contact, all of which can help buffer worry.
People Prone to Anxiety May Move Less
One important caveat: these were observational studies, which can reveal a link but cannot prove that activity causes lower anxiety. It is possible that people prone to anxiety are simply less inclined to be active, rather than the other way around. The consistency of the pattern across many countries and hundreds of thousands of people strengthens the case, but it does not settle it. What the data do suggest is that the relationship is not “more is always better”—the payoff for anxiety appears to level off at a moderate, achievable amount of movement.
Earlier Pooling of 14 Cohorts Found 26% Lower Odds
An earlier meta-analysis pooling 14 cohorts and nearly 76,000 people pointed the same way: the most active had roughly 26 percent lower odds of developing an anxiety disorder than the least active.2 It compared high with low activity rather than mapping the full curve, so the plateau itself rests mainly on the newer work. A 2025 study of about 7,000 adolescents likewise found mental-health benefits leveling off past roughly an hour of daily moderate activity.3
