Walking Well Short of the Usual Step Target Went With Lower Death Risk

Adults who averaged about 7,000 steps a day had a 47% lower risk of dying during the study period than those who took roughly 2,000 steps a day—and for most health outcomes, walking beyond 7,000 steps added only small further benefits. The finding comes from the largest review to date pooling step-count research from around the world.

57 Studies Pooled Across More Than 10 Countries

Researchers at the University of Sydney combined the results of 57 studies carried out between 2014 and 2025 across more than 10 countries—an approach called a meta-analysis, which pools many separate studies to detect patterns more reliably than any single one. Every included study measured walking with a device such as a pedometer or accelerometer rather than relying on memory. The team compared people starting at 2,000 steps a day and moving upward in 1,000-step increments, tracking outcomes such as death from any cause, heart disease, cancer, dementia, type 2 diabetes, depression, and falls.1

47% Lower Death Risk at About 7,000 Steps

Compared with about 2,000 steps a day, roughly 7,000 steps was associated with a 47% lower risk of dying from any cause—nearly the same as the benefit seen at 10,000 steps. The pattern held across conditions: about a 25% lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease, a 38% lower risk of dementia (with only a further 7% improvement at 10,000 steps), a 37% lower risk of dying from cancer, a 28% lower risk of falls, and a 22% lower rate of depressive symptoms.1 In short, the steepest gains appeared on the way up to 7,000, after which the curve largely flattened.

Even 4,000 Steps Beat Very Low Activity

The researchers emphasize that any increase in daily steps was linked to some benefit, echoing earlier work suggesting even 4,000 steps a day is associated with better health than very low activity. As one of the study authors put it, the results shift the focus “from perfection to progress.” For people who already comfortably reach 10,000 steps, there is no reason to cut back—the point is that meaningful benefits appear well before that popular target.1

Walkers May Differ in More Than Their Steps

Because this was a meta-analysis of mostly observational studies, it can show a strong association between more walking and better health, but it cannot prove that the steps themselves are the cause. People who walk more may also eat differently, smoke less, or be healthier to begin with. Even so, the consistency across dozens of studies and many countries strengthens confidence in the link.

Other Poolings Put the Peak at 6,000 to 10,000

Other pooled analyses point the same way but place the sweet spot differently. A meta-analysis of 15 international cohorts found the risk of dying kept falling until about 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day in adults 60 and older, but until roughly 8,000 to 10,000 in those under 60.2 An earlier pooling of seven cohorts linked each extra 1,000 daily steps to about 12% lower risk of death, with risk continuing to fall past 10,000.3
