Adults in the higher-bean pattern — about two servings a day — weighed roughly 2.5 kilograms (about 5.5 pounds) less and had waists about 2.3 centimeters (nearly an inch) smaller than those who ate no beans, and their BMI was about 0.8 point lower. A second, slightly lower bean pattern showed similar but smaller differences. Two other bean-containing patterns were not linked to weight differences, so the benefit was not a simple “more is always better” gradient — the overall makeup of the diet mattered.1
