    A plausible biological explanation

    Vitamin K is best known for its role in blood clotting, but it also helps activate proteins that maintain healthy tissue. One of these, matrix Gla protein, is present in the lungs and helps protect elastin — the springy fibers that let the lungs expand and recoil with each breath. When elastin breaks down, as it does in COPD, breathing becomes harder. Still, the researchers caution that vitamin K1-rich foods travel with fiber, antioxidants, and other beneficial compounds, so the greens may be acting as part of a broader healthy eating pattern rather than alone.1

    This was an observational study, so it can show an association but cannot prove that leafy greens directly protect the lungs; people who eat more vegetables often differ in other ways.     Adults who averaged about 7,000 steps a day had a 47% lower risk of dying during the study period than those who took roughly 2,000 steps a day — and for most health outcomes, walking beyond 7,000 steps added only small further benefits.1 The finding comes from the largest review to date pooling step-count research from around the world.

    How the researchers reached the finding

    Researchers at the University of Sydney combined the results of 57 studies carried out between 2014 and 2025 across more than 10 countries — an approach called a meta-analysis, which pools many separate studies to detect patterns more reliably than any single one. Every included study measured walking with a device such as a pedometer or accelerometer rather than relying on memory. The team compared people starting at 2,000 steps a day and moving upward in 1,000-step increments, tracking outcomes such as death from any cause, heart disease, cancer, dementia, type 2 diabetes, depression, and falls.1

    The 7,000-step “sweet spot”

    Compared with about 2,000 steps a day, roughly 7,000 steps was associated with a 47% lower risk of dying from any cause — nearly the same as the benefit seen at 10,000 steps. The pattern held across conditions: about a 25% lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease, a 38% lower risk of dementia (with only a further 7% improvement at 10,000 steps), a 37% lower risk of dying from cancer, a 28% lower risk of falls, and a 22% lower rate of depressive symptoms.1 In short, the steepest gains appeared on the way up to 7,000, after which the curve largely flattened.

    Why “more” is not always dramatically better

    The researchers emphasize that any increase in daily steps was linked to some benefit, echoing earlier work suggesting even 4,000 steps a day is associated with better health than very low activity. As one of the study authors put it, the results shift the focus “from perfection to progress.” For people who already comfortably reach 10,000 steps, there is no reason to cut back — the point is that meaningful benefits appear well before that popular target.1

    What this does and does not show

    Because this was a meta-analysis of mostly observational studies, it can show a strong association between more walking and better health, but it cannot prove that the steps themselves are the cause.
